| Le 26/11/17 La relève ?  Me and the Norum kids at Furuviksparken at our first ever gig together! We were having a chat with the guitar tech of Jerry Williams (Official)'s guitar player Staffan Astner. The kids were very interested in what kind of strings he was using. We saw the gig and Jerry Williams rocked! The kids loved it and me too of course ...ha...ha For those who don't know Jerry... He was in the movie "On The Loose" (The Grammy and Oscar winning movie ..ha..ha not!). Probably the worst movie ever made but Jerry was good and we did a good version of "Rock the Night". /John |

| Le 12/11/17 Ian a joué son premier concert avec sa caisse claire "Black Diamond" signée Ian Haugland.  Hi friends✌ Played my very first live show last night in Santander Spain, with my Ian Haugland signature ”Black Diamond” snare drum by 101 Drums. My impression? This is by far the best sounding, most stable and durable snare drum i ever played live on stage! I didn’t have to adjust the tuning or any of the hardware on the drum once during the whole show... that has NEVER happened during my 30 years as a professional drummer! The snare drum was rocksolid as only a Black Diamond can be! Marilyn Monroe once sang that ”Diamond’s are a girls best friend”... i prefer to sing ”Black Diamond’s are a drummers best friend” |

There are no words for me to express the depth and darkness of the grief for the loss of my son. I will therefore instead send my thoughts, love and strength to my two wonderful daughters Jannie and Linnéa, but also share this with all my friends and family... Life is fragile and volatile, lets not spend our precious time on stupid human traits and behaviours. Let’s celebrate the memory of Simon with the only eternal thing... | Le 08/11/17 C'est une triste nouvelle qui n'a rien à voir avec la musique, mais je partage avec vous cette info très privée que Ian et sa femme ont annoncée sur leurs Facebook respectifs, le décès de leur fils Simon . Condoléances à eux et à leurs enfants.  Dear Friends... It’s with the deepest sadness i tell you this... My beloved son Simon has very suddenly and very tragically passed away from us. It’s impossible for me to understand and to grasp the cold fact that i’ll never again see his glowing warm eyes, never hear his cheerful chuckles, like when i told him one of my bad jokes, that only him and me were deranged enough to find amusing. But hardest of all is to realize that i will never again hear him say... ”I Love You dad!” Right now i feel like i’m drifting in a boat on an endless cold black ocean, just holding on not to get draged down into the deep. Still, i feel lucky to have friends and family to share my grief with... But most of all I’m truly blessed to have my wonderful wife Marie Haugland, that understand me, and lift me up through this emotional rollercoaster. She is the lighthouse that i’m navigering by on this vast sea of sadness... and also Simon’s words that echoes from far beyond the horizon... " It will all be ok, because you know i’ll always love you dad!" Until we meet again, rest in peace Simon my son Ian Haugland |

| Le 30/09/2017 ALBUM "WALK THE EARTH" LA CHRONIQUE TITRE PAR TITRE DE EUROPE PARADISE.  Je vous propose une petite chronique, titre par titre réalisée après plusieurs écoutes. Et oui, il en faut plusieurs pour se mettre dans l’ambiance de cet album très orienté seventies en référence aux groupes qui ont influencé EUROPE, comme par exemple Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie voire Pink Floyd. (Meilleurs titres: *) Walk The Earth * : cette chanson qui reste en tête a été choisie comme 1er single et autant dire qu’il reflète bien l’ensemble de l’album. À mon avis, sur ce titre, EUROPE rend hommage aux groupes qui l’ont influencé comme par exemple Pink Floyd. La guitare est chaude et heavy, la voix de Joey est puissante et encore meilleure que sur les précédents albums. The Siege * : nous voilà avec un titre vraiment sympa, dynamique et mélodique avec son riff heavy et une basse omniprésente. Mic avec ses claviers et l'orgue Hammond sont comme sur tout l’album, très présents et J. Norum nous offre un solo inspiré. Kingdom United * : un excellent morceau majestueux et entraînant. Que du bon dans cette compo avec un riff très nerveux et ses claviers du meilleur effet. Mon titre préféré de l'album. Pictures : une jolie balade mais somme toute banale, basée sur du piano et de la guitare acoustique dans un style David Bowie. L’agréable fin instrumentale et son solo donnent un second souffle à cette chanson qui lui permet de finir sur une meilleure note. Election Day : ça repart sur un titre pêchu dans un style Deep Purple à la sauce EUROPE, avec un riff guitare/claviers, qui nous plonge dans les années 70. On retiendra surtout de ce morceau la voix de Joey et ses mélodies. L’ensemble est agréable à écouter. Wolves : voilà un exercice rare pour EUROPE. Ce titre est très lent et heavy. Il mélange un style mélancolique et psychédélique. Je trouve la voix légèrement mixée en retrait, le refrain est mélodique. Le solo de John est très bon. A la première écoute on se dit que ce titre est étrange, hanté, mais en l’écoutant bien on se met dans l’ambiance, on se laisse apprivoiser par la compo et on l’apprécie vraiment. GTO * : à nouveau un riff rapide pour débuter cette chanson au rythme enlevé qui me fait penser à « Speed King » de Purple. On ne s’ennuie pas avec un Joey qui s’en donne à cœur-joie ! Encore un solo sympa sur cette compo sans aucun temps mort. C’est un plaisir d’écouter GTO qui reste en tête facilement. Haze : à mon goût, un titre pas vraiment génial, malgré quelques trucs sympas dedans. Whenever You’re Ready * : on est parti sur un titre entraînant, endiablé, très court et sans aucun temps mort. Parfait pour un concert, c’est vraiment du EUROPE avec un solo lui aussi up-tempo. Cependant, par moment, le clavier est un peu trop en avant par rapport à la guitare. Turn To Dust : un début en fade-in pour un morceau au rythme assez lent à la limite d’une balade. Je trouve encore la guitare un peu en retrait au niveau du mixage. Par moment j’ai eu l’impression d‘écouter un titre de Start From The Dark. La chanson bénéficie d’un solo mélodique mais la fin est trop répétitive (style copier-coller). J’aurais plutôt aimé un long solo à la façon « Devil Sings The Blues », mais ce n’est que mon avis. Que dire aussi de la façon de terminer la chanson d’une manière subite pour poser une ghost-track de quelques secondes totalement décalée dans le style jazzy des années 20-30 ? À vous de voir lors de l’écoute de l’album.  En conclusion, nous voici avec de très bonnes compos, dans le style d’un autre temps, le classic rock des seventies. Pas sûr que tous les fans apprécieront l’orientation musicale de cet album. À la première écoute on ne fait pas « Waouh » sur un titre, mais cela vient assez rapidement au fur et à mesure des écoutes. J’attends avec impatience d’avoir le CD en main pour bénéficier d’une meilleure qualité de son. Et sinon les gars de EUROPE, comment dire... 41 mn de musique au total c’est un peu court !!! Voilà, j’espère que cette mini chronique vous donnera envie d’écouter le prochain album de EUROPE qui sortira le 20 octobre 2017. P.S : un grand merci à Roger de Replica Promotion. Mise à jour du 17/10/17 : J'ai écouté aujourd'hui l'album en version CD reçu de l'agence promo et je peux vous dire que le son est génial. L'album s'en retrouve un niveau au dessus, et on entend distinctement chaque instrument et arrangement. Je trouvais les claviers/Hammond un peu en avant mais sur le CD tout est bien équilibré ! Vous ne regretterez pas de patienter jusqu'à vendredi pour pouvoir savourer cet album de préférence en version CD ou LP . |

OK, je me permets encore un petit post au sujet du nouveau live d'Europe, parce que jusqu'ici je n'avais vu cet album qu'en photo... Mais l'attente est terminée : je l'ai finalement reçu ! Et autant dire que j'ai eu une magnifique surprise, car en réalité, mes photos sont "partout" : sur l'ensemble du packaging (boîtier, CDs, livret), j'en ai compté... 52 ! Je suis donc vraiment heureux du résultat et je tiens à féliciter ici le graphiste qui a su si bien mettre en valeur mes photos : bravo et merci à Paul Tippett de Vitamin P ! En guise d'illustration, voici deux extraits du livret. Le premier, c'est simplement les crédits avec mon nom (satané ego, je n'ai pas pu m'en empêcher...). Mais sur le second, vous pouvez notamment voir une photo prise depuis l'arrière de la scène pendant le concert. J'étais derrière les amplis et la batterie quand Joey m'a repéré en venant boire de l'eau. C'est une photo que j'aime beaucoup. Donc voilà, je reviendrai sûrement encore une dernière fois sur le sujet en septembre parce qu'à ce moment-là sortira un coffret collector limité à 1000 exemplaires incluant un livre de mes photos... donc je pense que j'aurai de la peine à contenir mon enthousiasme ! Mais en attendant j'aurai de nouvelles photos d'autres groupes à publier. | Le 02/05/17 EUROPE a déjà terminé l'enregistrement du futur album (à peine 15 jours). Comme annoncé précédemment l'album a été produit par Dave Cobb, et nous apprenons que l'ingénieur du son est Eddie Spear. L'album doit sortir en octobre avec un ou deux titres qui devraient être dévoilés avant la sortie de l'opus. Sur leur page officielle Facebook, nous devrions avoir des vidéos et des photos des sessions d'enregistrement. Le groupe est prêt pour la tournée de cet été, mais nous n'avons toujours aucune date de sortie concernant la vidéo du concert des 30 ans de l'album TFC !  FRIENDS! We have just finished the recording for our new album at the legendary Abbey Road Studios! It turned out so much more exciting than we expected! The vibe in this studio is great! The staff and facilities are out of this world. Of course we couldn’t resist having some fun with vintage equipment and amazing recording techniques. Our producer Dave Cobb really made the songs fly, beautifully engineered by Eddie Spear. The album is due out in October with one or two tracks coming your way ahead of release. Il utilise également une Stratocaster de 1965 (celle de TFC) pour beaucoup de solos, mais elle n'est pas présente sur cette photo !  My main partners in crime. These guitars I use mainly for rhythm stuff except the Strat which is the "WOK Strat" that sounds great for everything. But I'm also using the 1965 Fender Strat (The Final Countdown guitar) for a lot of solos. Unfortunatly not in this pic but coming soon! /John |

| Le 03/03/2017 Une interview de Joey du Facebook Officiel de EUROPE. TECH TUESDAY - JOEY TEMPEST Friends! This week's TECH TUESDAY post is all about our own Joey Tempest. We approached Joey for some of his background and thoughts on becoming a singer, a musician, and just an overall fan of rock music. Enjoy ! Where / when did you begin singing ? JT : After hearing artists like David Bowie and Elton John on the radio I wanted to emulate, sing and learn their songs, I was around eight or nine years old. A friend of my dads also taught me three chords on the guitar around that time and I was getting interested in writing songs. My dad says I used to play guitar and sing before I went to school and again directly when I got home from school. When I was around ten or eleven I started looking for likeminded people in school and around where I lived and formed my first band called Made In Hong Kong.  (Photo credit: Denis O'Regan) Have you ever worked with a voice coach ? JT: There was a period before we recorded The Final Countdown album when I had some voice trouble. I was introduced to a voice coach in Stockholm and he taught me how to warm up my voice properly and how to "save it" if I was in trouble on a tour. I use these exercises when I need them still to this day. He was very helpful and made the vocal performance on the The Final Countdown sound even better. What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned about preserving your voice ? JT: Basically, over the years you learn as a singer that the best way to keep your voice is to get your sleep on tour therefore I stay in hotels and avoid tour busses if I can. Also drinking alcohol dries out your vocal chords so I try to keep it to a minimum : ). If my voice is a bit rough on a tour I will warm up 30 min before the show, I will sing scales up and down moving only half a note with different vowels and finish with some old fashioned songs that makes it easy for me to check what shape my voice is in. How would you advise an amateur singer re: building their range ? JT: I never really worked on building a vocal range. I just sing. I suppose if you are in musical theatre or similar you may have to actually practice and stretch your range. Rock n roll singing is about feeling and expression - not so much technique. Most singers sing their highest notes early in their career and hopefully quickly learn to write songs in a lower key. If you don't, you will only pay for it later in the career : ) Do you have any "go to" items for singing or special warm ups ? JT: I probably annoy the guys a little bit with some of my singing exercises, when I do them : ) but it's sometimes actually them that reminds me to do my vocal exercises. Like all singers that have done this for a while, I have tried everything over the years. Special voice tablets, different kind of voice teas and throat sprays, etc. I think sometimes some of these things work only on a psychological level but hey! that's good too. But I find that a cup of honey tea sometimes sets me up nicely. There have been a few times over the years when I have practically lost my voice on tour. But instead of cancelling shows you have to look at taking more serious medicines just to make it through, like for instance cortisone. I don't recommend it to anyone but it has saved my behind a couple of times. Besides rock songs, is there a vocal style you enjoy OR are interested in trying out ? JT: Not really. I've been asked to perform in musicals but I was never interest in that way of performing. Do you have a favorite microphone and why ? JT: When I perform live I use a Shure UR2 Beta 58. In the studio I usually use a Neuman U47 or a U87. Our sound engineer has recommended the Shure UR2 for live performances and I trust him completely and the crowd seem to like my vocal sound so I'm sticking with that one. What’s the easiest thing about singing for you ? JT: I guess I find that keeping time and rhythm comes very naturally to me. I also play a bit of drums and rhythm guitar where that also comes in handy. What’s the hardest thing about singing for you ? JT: Probably keeping the "pitch" when I run and jump around TOO MUCH on stage... How important is physical stamina to performance ? JT: I think drummers and singers have the most physically demanding job in a rock band. It's important to present yourself at your best and to always try to be in a decent shape. You need to be able to give the best performance you are capable of. Do you have any regimen that you follow to stay healthy ? JT: I jog or walk quite a lot just to keep myself ready for touring and traveling. These things can take a lot out of you. Who are your favorite singers of all time ? JT: A few of them include: Robert Plant, David Bowie, Buddy Miles, David Coverdale, Chris Cornell, Van Morrison, Elvis, Robert Plant, Bob Marley and Phil Lynott. Also Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin and Ann Wilson. If you were stranded on a desert island, which 5 albums you would need to have there to stay sane ? JT: If we're talking rock music then below are the albums I would bring. Apart from these artists, I would also not survive without some Elvis, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and Jackson Brown. 1. Deep Purple - Made In Japan 2. Rush - Moving Pictures 3. Audioslave - Cochise 4. Led Zeppelin - 4 5. Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous What was your first concert as a spectator ? JT: Electric Light Orchestra when I was 13 years old. Did you have an “I want to do that moment”? If you did, what were the circumstances of it. JT: Just seeing frontmen like Robert Plant, Phil Lynott, and David Coverdale in a live situation made me want to work harder and become a better writer and singer. They made it look so easy and at the same time they had the sound, the moves, the aura that just moved me. Do you read music? Do you place any importance on reading music and why ? JT: No I don't read music but reading music is important in so many fields and it's an amazing talent and I deeply respect anyone who can do this. However, when I was a kid I was a Louis Armstrong fan. I played trumpet for a short period and started taking some lessons and began learning to read music. One day I started to improvise a bit during a lesson and the teacher didn't like it....so I never went back to a teacher or reading music. I found that for me personally it restricted my "jamming" and improvising. But I discovered I had a good 'ear' and could listen to music and then emulate it on my guitar or piano and learn the instruments by myself. Some of the most innovative and successful rock and pop artists do not read music. That doesn't say that is wrong to learn to read music as I said, I find people who read music very talented but I just found that I didn't need it for my kind of writing. Last two: If you weren’t doing what you do now – as in fronting an internationally successful band - what would you most likely be doing ? JT: When I was young my dad and I travelled around taking part in Go-Cart races. I raced and he was my mechanic. I also developed an interest in Formula One. Ultimately though, music and being in a rock band was always my true calling. I guess if I wouldn't have gone down the musical path maybe I could have been a racing driver of some kind. Is there another skill you possess that people would be surprised by ? JT: When I was younger I did some aquarelle paintings. It's interesting but I find it takes a lot of energy and time. Maybe something for the future! |
